Many paint firms have selected a green hue for their 2022 top color pick, but Pantone is making a much bolder choice. Could this be another hot color for home interiors in the new year?

The 2022 Pantone color of the year is Very Peri, a periwinkle blue with violet-red undertones. The color was created by Pantone specifically as the color of the year. The bright color is intended to evoke comfort and courage in unpredictable times, Pantone says.

The paint firm says the color can serve as a “much-needed” color pop in the home. They believe it’ll be a hot color choice for bolder home accessories and an eye-catching hue mixed into a pattern or painted on a colorful accent wall or a ceiling to create depth.

“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone … Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”

Pantone last selected a color of the year two years ago with its choice of Classic Blue.

Leading paint firms select their top picks for the color of the year annually. So far, many companies have chosen green as their “it” color, including:

1. Benjamin Moore: October Mist, a soft, silvery green

2. Sherwin-Williams: Evergreen Fog, a mid-tone gray-green

3. PPG: Olive Sprig, a gray-green sage

4. Behr: Breezeway, a silvery blue-green

5. Glidden: Guacamole, an avocado green

6. Better Homes & Gardens: Laurel Leaf, a dusty green shade
